Why RM BTS Hesitates About Marriage and Parenting

RM BTS sees marriage as a personal choice.
He admitted he can barely raise himself.
His honest thoughts earned massive online praise.

In a surprisingly introspective Weverse live session on October 5th, BTS leader RM offered fans more than just a casual holiday check-in. Dressed in a relaxed checkered flannel shirt and a cap, he settled in for a deep and meandering conversation that quickly became a viral sensation.

Rather than focusing on typical idol topics, he delved into the profound societal pressures of adulthood, sharing his nuanced and highly personal views on marriage, children, and the very architecture of a fulfilling life. It was a raw, philosophical monologue that resonated deeply with a global audience, especially during the Chuseok holiday, a time often fraught with family expectations and questions about life's traditional path.

RM Speaks on Marriage, Fatherhood, and the Weight of Expectations

During the live stream, RM boldly reframed the concept of marriage, stating it is not a mandatory life goal but a personal choice.

RM highlighting the absence of a one-size-fits-all formula for happiness. He displayed a remarkable awareness of the societal machinery that pushes people toward this institution.

"If I meet the right person at the right time, I might get married. Or maybe I’ll just live alone like this. I don’t think there’s a correct answer," he mused.

"People feel pressured about marriage, and there are realistic aspects to consider. Especially for women, I think society and the media keep pressuring them about having children and other issues. I just wish everyone could live according to their own pace," RM continued.

He then dissected a common, yet flawed, motivation for marrying which i loneliness. His logic was both simple and profound.

"When I think about it, if you can’t endure being alone, will getting married really make things better? Because once you’re married, there may come a time when you want to be alone again. People are fickle like that," RM reasoned.

"So I think someone who can be comfortable being alone can also be comfortable being with someone, and the opposite is true as well," he concluded.

Then, RM revealed that using marriage as an escape hatch from solitude is not a sustainable solution. This line of thinking seamlessly extended to his views on parenthood. With striking self-awareness, RM questioned his own readiness for such a monumental responsibility.

"As for having kids, I’m not sure about that either. Honestly, I can barely handle raising myself. Having a new life isn’t something that goes the way you want. Children have their own minds. When I think about how much trouble I gave my parents growing up, if a kid like me were born to me? Oh man… I can only imagine how frustrating that would be. Of course, they’d be lovable too, but still… there’s no right answer," RM confessed.

Widespread Acclaim for a Modern, Empathetic Mindset

RM's candid reflections instantly sparked intense and overwhelmingly positive reactions online, particularly on Korean community sites like TheQoo.

Netizens flooded forums with praise, applauding his maturity, empathy, and intellectual depth. Many were struck by his conscious acknowledgment of the disproportionate pressure placed on women, a rarity for a male celebrity in the public eye.

The comments painted a picture of a public figure who is genuinely engaged in the process of learning and growth.

"The fact that he openly acknowledged that women face social pressure, that alone is surprising (in a good way). Most Korean men I’ve seen refuse to even admit that."

"Moments like this prove that empathy really is a form of intelligence… I’ve never seen a male celebrity make statements like this before."

"I completely agree with him. In the end, you have to be whole even when you’re alone… Only then can you be stable with a partner or spouse."

"Every time I see RM, I feel like he’s matured and grown in the right direction. It’s great that someone like him is a top idol."

"Watching the live felt like a nonstop truth party, I agreed with everything he said."

"Our president RM just dropped some legendary quotes for the family holidays."

While he was blunt about his current uncertainties, RM did briefly and honestly admit to a personal ambition, confessing that "being a father" remains one of his life goals. This moment of vulnerability showcased a man balancing personal dreams with a realistic assessment of their weight. Beyond this viral conversation, RM continues to lead and prepare BTS for their highly anticipated group comeback next spring, all while moving forward with his own artistic endeavors, including his upcoming special exhibition 'RM x San Francisco MoMA' at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from October next year through February 2027.

Also, personally, RM’s words hit me hard :sob: I grew up with relatives asking me about marriage every Lebaran, and hearing him say it’s okay to go at your own pace feels so healing. Namjoon always knows how to say the things our generation needs :purple_heart:

RM’s take on marriage is as solid as a good pint. If he ever needs a break, my pub’s open for a chat. Cheers to not rushing into things! :clinking_beer_mugs:

Do you think more male idols should speak up about social pressure on women like he did? It felt refreshing and respectful :cherry_blossom:

His point about being okay alone before marrying someone hit hard. It’s something society rarely tells us, especially in Korea.

I agree, but I worry some idols might get backlash for being too “political.”

Every time RM goes live, it feels less like an idol talk and more like a TED talk mixed with comfort. His growth is inspiring🌟

The way he acknowledged how women face pressure about marriage and children was so mature. Many male celebs avoid that topic completely.
